Would you like a tour of the College of Pharmacy?

A few days ago, I was going through the college’s website trying to see where all the hospital rotations were for the summer. I was trying to see if there were any sites that were in the Mankato area. While looking around, I stumbled across a link to the university’s Youtube page. With nothing better to do at that moment, I decided to watch some of the videos.

What I was not ready for was a video of me giving a tour of the college. It was the first video I clicked on. At the beginning of the year, I was asked to be apart of the video but wasn’t sure if the video would even be produced. To my surprise it was and I have to tell you the people who put it together did a great job. I remembered that we had to do a lot off “takes” because I was so nervous and messed up numerous times.  It was hard because I had no script and wasn’t sure what they all wanted in the video. From that experience, I am soo glad that I chose to be a pharmacist and not an actor. I hope that I did the campus justice and that you don’t hold anything against the campus because of my bad acting.

PD1 Orientation at Sandstone 8/31/11

Me and my Herd fo Moose

It is hard to believe that a year ago I was arriving at Sandstone as a member of the incoming class of pharmacy students at the University of Minnesota (Class of 2014). I remember it like it was just yesterday. I didn’t know what to expect back then and that hasn’t changed. The only thing that has is that today I am one of those student volunteers and my job was to show the incoming class the same great welcome that I have received just last year. When I went through the ritual, I was in the “Flamingo” group. Today I am the leader of a herd of Moose! I have been looking forward to this since I went through it. I personally feel that this informal orientation is a great way of introducing new students to the profession of pharmacy and the U of MN family. My team was great. We worked well together and learned from each other. It was great to see each and every member supporting each other in the activities. We had a blast with our battle cry of “Moose, Moose, Moose” and broke the tension of the stereotypical expectations of being a pharmacist. We can have as much fun as any other profession. My advice to the Class of 2015, when this opportunity comes around next year, consider giving back. Your willingness to volunteer will help other students start their journey on the right path. You also get to meet all the new students that will change the profession in their own way.
